I trained as a Sports Massage Therapist with Cornwall College mainly planning to expand my knowledge of anatomy so I could better teach my yoga classes. Straight away I realized how much I loved this approach to body work, and decided to continue study and complete my Level 4 qualification as well. I also have a qualification in Bamboo Massage, which uses similar techniques to sports but with warmed bamboo sticks instead of hands, and offer deep tissue treatments as well. These can both be very deep and relaxing massages.
A sports massage treats not only the muscles, but also the other soft tissues in the body, such as tendons and fascia. This form of massage will generally focus on a specific area that needs treatment, where as a deep tissue massage is more general and could be a full body massage. A deep tissue massage is good for relieving tensions and general pain. A sports massage is usually more specific and can also be used to rehabilitate after an injury has healed. Sports massage will suit anyone looking for the treatment of injuries or repetitive sprains and strains. Bamboo massage is a sort of combination of the two, a deep tissue treatment combined with some of the techniques of sports, such as trigger point therapy, and using warmed bamboo sticks instead of your hands. This can be a very deep treatment and I often like to combine hands and bamboo during these sessions.
Libby Lane
I completed a Level 4 Diploma in Holistic Massage and Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology from the Bristol College of Massage and Bodywork in 2008, before going on to complete a Diploma in Thai Massage at the same college in 2015.
I am also accredited in Indian head massage, hot stone massage, pregnancy and post-natal massage, seated/chair massage. I participate in regular continued professional development to further my techniques: I have attended advanced training in freeing the shoulders and neck, myofascial release, deep tissue work, hands free techniques, 3D side-lying, alignment techniques and focused training on working into the hips and lower back.
As a fully qualified practitioner my main aim is to show people how to make the most of their bodies and enable self-efficacy. I have found that through regular treatment my clients become closer to their bodies, feeling their way through weakness as well as tension, learning postural awareness and, importantly, discovering activities that will work for them to improve their overall health. Such activities range from taking up Yoga or Pilates, running or other cardio exercise, to spending more time outdoors in nature and making more time for themselves, to sitting correctly at a laptop, giving up smoking, reducing sugar intake, to simply buying a new pillow. These are just some of the ways that illustrate how massage therapy can help clients reach their full potential as human beings.
